Unlike most engineering maths texts, this book does not assume a firm grasp of GCSE maths, and unlike low-level general maths texts, the content is tailored specifically to the needs of engineers. The result is a unique book written for engineering students that takes a starting point below GCSE level. Basic Engineering Mathematics is therefore ideal for students of a wide range of abilities, especially for those who find the theoretical side of mathematics difficult.
Now in its fifth edition, Basic Engineering Mathematics is an established textbook that all students requiring a fundamental knowledge of mathematics of engineering with find essential reading. The content has been designed to meet the needs of students studying Level 2 courses, including GCSE Engineering, the Diploma, and BTEC First specifications. Level 3 students will also find this text to be a useful resource for getting to grips with essential mathematics concepts, because the compulsory topics in BTEC National and A Level Engineering courses are also fully addressed.
John Bird’s approach is based on numerous worked examples, supported by 750 worked problems and 1550 further problems contained within exercises throughout the text. In addition, 14 revision tests are included at regular intervals. Ideal for use as tests or homework, full solutions to the revision tests are supplied on the accompanying instructor’s website.

I’ve had this book for approx 1.5 years now and it has been very useful for my BTEC level 3 electrical engineering course.
However there are several typos and mistakes which are VERY annoying when it turns out you’ve spent 20 minuets constructing a graph and a table and you check the answers and the x and y values were the wrong way around in the question itself!
Also the majority of the explanations and walk throughs are brief at best, which is frustrating, but if you are working through this book along side any college tuition (like i am) it’s very satisfying to relate knowledge from the class room to the examples in the book.

Exceptionally aid and study guide, working from the key fundamentals through to the advances modules.
Very useful for those who are weak in the mathematic field.

I’ve just purchased the basic engineering mathematics along with John Bird’s Engineering Mathematic. These two books are good choice for engineering students. I highly recommend these two books for level 1, 2 and 3 students.

Downloaded the kindle edition. Very good coverage on the subject. I think the paper version would be better for me for making notes on etc.. for my uni engineering course, however it’s also great to travel light with all my books on one device..

I bought this book 10 years ago whilst I was studying at college, I can’t believe how many jobs and career changes I’ve had since then! I am going through my Amazon purchases and writing as many reviews as possible.
